Family Health Center of Kalamazoo

Healthcare
Three years ago, it was discovered that Kalamazoo’s south side contained the largest population of people with limited healthcare options.
After covering residents in the city’s north side with a clinic at 117 W. Patterson Street, Family Health Center (FHC), a federally qualified health center designated by the government to provide care to underserved populations in Kalamazoo County, determined – through a community needs assessment – that it was time to place resources around town.
The three-story, 50,000-square-foot clinic is located on 2.5 acres on Alcott Street. The building has 24 exam rooms and 25 operational rooms, allowing it to serve 30,000 patients.
Its lower level houses occupational and physical therapy offices. This area also provides administrative offices, storage, staff locker rooms, a staff lounge, and a conference room.
A dental clinic can be found on the main level, and this $2.2 million clinic is the largest in any Federally Qualified Health Center in the state. University of Michigan School of Dentistry students work with patients in a state-of-the-art clinic.
Providers at the clinic embrace the Integrated Care Model. This team-based approach combines medical, dental, and behavioral care to make visiting the clinic a “one-stop shopping” experience. Services include family practice, pediatrics, dental, pharmacy, health care education, behavioral health, case management, community health education, physical therapy, and occupational therapy.
One of the most important functions of the clinic is its ability to offer preventative care and education. Socioeconomic factors in the neighborhood prevent personal health from being a focus for residents.
