YWCA of KalamazooRenovation of Downtown Kalamazoo Shelter
Client YWCA of Kalamazoo
Location Kalamazoo, MI
Size (sq. ft) 41,950
Completion Date 2008
Phase 1 of the YWCA project began in June 2007 and included half of the shelter remodel, the childcare center remodel on the first floor, new boilers and air handler, and new offices and storage in the lower level. Phase 2 started in December with the second half of the shelter, most of the office area, and the nurse exam suite. Phase 3 started in March 2008 with the remodel of the multipurpose room, the rest of the office area and miscellaneous tie-ins to complete the project.
The basement (now called the lower level) was previously unused space and was renovated to add offices, a multipurpose room, storage for donations, food storage with a new walk-in cooler and freezer, and the nurse exam suite was remodeled to be more inviting. The first-floor office area was renovated for a better workflow for the staff. The childcare center remodel provided more space for the children and reorganized the classrooms for a better flow. The shelter living area was opened up for a more open floor plan between the living, dining, and family room. All of the bedrooms now have new carpet, paint, lighting, and ceilings.
The building was occupied by shelter residents, childcare, and office staff during the three phases of construction. We installed 1-hour rated walls between occupied spaces and construction areas and kept the security of the building intact during all phases of construction.
CSM worked with many trade contractors to have a portion of their work donated to the YWCA because it is a non-profit organization.
